First, what is long-term care?
When you receive long-term care it generally covers a wide range of services, but really ends up falling into two categories.
Those are, skilled care and personal care.
You will receive skilled care when you’re on the mend from an illness or injury.
Personal care on the other hand helps maintain the activities and functions of your day to day life.
The trick with long-term care is that it’s usually not medical care and rarely requires a doctor of nurse.
The meat and potatoes of LTC is providing you help with daily functions like bathing and dressing.
LTC can also include speech or occupational therapy, setting up your bathroom with grab bars, or even light housekeeping or preparing meals.
It’s Not Just for “Old People”
If we’re being honest with each other, anyone could suddenly need long-term care. If you have a serious accident, developed an illness or get diagnosed with a disabling disease.
I’m sure you know of someone in your life, maybe not directly, but a friend of friend who was involved in a serious car accident and was never the same again.
If something like that happens when you are really young, the cost of LTC can be catastrophic for a family.
Long-term care insurance is just like auto or home, or health insurance. It protects your assets and pay for your care during those difficult times.
What’s Covered Under LTC?
Long-term care has been around for about 25 years and at first only covered care in nursing homes.
Luckily today that coverage has expanded to include some of the following services:
Institutional Care
- Nursing Home
- Adult Foster Home
- Assisted Living
- Services Facility
- Residential Health Care Facility
- Bed Reservations
- Respite Care
- Hospice Care
Home Care
- Adult Day Care
- Home Health Care
- Homemaker Personal Care
