What Is Critical Illness Insurance and Do You Need It?

May 29, 2014

You might have noticed every time I open my mouth, or in this case, put my fingers on a keyboard, I’m telling you something you don’t want to hear or think about.

That is unfortunately the life of an insurance agent, it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do.

While it doesn’t seem likely any of my words of wisdom will end up in a greeting card anytime soon, today’s question about critical illness coverage is more of the same but just as important.

First, critical illness insurance is pretty much what it sounds like, if you are diagnosed with a “critical” illness (like cancer) this separate policy will pay you money to cover the medical bills.

This can really come in handy to cover your high deductible health insurance plan and prevent you from shelling out thousands of dollars, $6,350 is the highest single deductible allowed now after the Affordable Care Act took effect this year, if you run into a critical illness.

A critical illness policy will pay a set dollar amount for you to use towards your medical bills resulting from, you guessed it, a critical illness.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, the need for this type of policy is to help out with the costs resulting from, yep, a critical illness.

Which, I’m sure if you were to run some numbers, would account for a big percentage of health insurance usage.

Of course this type of coverage does fall into the optional, extra, nice to have category and isn’t as important as health insurance, but it is a nice option to be aware of.
