Let's get one thing straight first, if you're not working with someone who is automatically doing this for you every year, that's your first mistake.
But we will get into that more in a little bit.
Shopping your auto, and home insurance for that matter, has become an obsession, at least that's what the commercials constantly running on TV would like you to think.
It doesn't matter if your good neighbor will put you in good hands and save you 15 percent on your car insurance. If you lose your way and become a tad too promiscuous with your insurance companies, you will end up causing more problems than you solve.
The simple answer to this question is yes, but… You shouldn't always switch.
Chasing every last penny will actually cost you in the long run and switching auto insurance companies to save 37 cents is never a good idea.
Here's why.
Insurance Companies Like Loyalty
The crazy part about this is, they don't necessarily care how long you've been with them, they want to know how loyal you've been to the company you're looking to switch from.
The longer you've been with your previous company the more your new company is going to like you.
That means saving that 37 cents last year cost you more than if you would have stuck around for a few years.
Also, all companies are NOT created equal and all coverage is not created equal.
You will want to make sure you are comparing policies with similar or adequate limits, because you can definitely save money if you lower the limits on your policy.
NOTE: Most of the time that's not a good idea.
Working with an Independent Agent
Like I saying earlier, if you don't have someone who is automatically “shopping” your insurance every year, you are wasting your time and money.
Buying directly from a company who has a washed up TV actor hawking their goods usually means they are a one trick pony.
In other words, they only have one option to offer you, State Farm just has State Farm, Allstate just has Allstate. While we're at it, why does every company have to have “state” in their name…?
If that is the case you will find yourself doing all the leg work next year to find new auto insurance companies to compare.
Doesn't sound like a very good time to me.
Working with an independent agent will keep your legs from working in the sense they can bring multiple companies for you to choose from and look out for YOUR best interest, not one specific company.
